OK, I'm still using 5.1.3 here. I have the primary DNS server on a 10.4 box, and the secondary on a 10.3 box.
I want to upgrade to 6.0. It sounds like I need to move the secondary to a 10.4 box as well, which is no problem. My question is what is the best way to accomplish all of this? Eg: how do I upgrade an install on an existing machine? And as far as the 10.3 secondary goes, would I migrate it to a 10.4 box first (and how) then upgrade to 6.0, or would I install 6.0 on the 10.4 box then migrate the data from the 10.3 secondary (and how).
Thanks!!
- John

Order really doesn't matter much. If it were me, to minimize any kind of service interruption, I would upgrade them as follows:
Back up /etc/named.conf, because the upgrade will either modify or replace it.
Upgrade to Tiger. Insert the DVD and start the upgrade, which reboots off the DVD. Then just follow the prompts.
Restore /etc/named.conf.
Upgrade Men & Mice Suite on both machines. That is, install the new version of Men & Mice DNS Server Controller on each machine, and install the new version of Men & Mice Central on the machine currently running it.
Decide whether and where to install the web interface and the CLI..

Actually, I need to *move* my secondary DNS installation on the 10.3 machine to a 10.4 machine - I'm not upgrading the 10.3 machine to 10.4. So, how would I go about doing such? Thanks!

Assuming your current slave is just a slave, and does not run Men & Mice Central, you can simply install a fresh copy of Men & Mice DNS Server Controller on the new slave, and then copy over the following files from the old slave:
/var/named/conf/zones
/var/named/conf/zoneopt/
/var/named/hosts/
Then restart DNS Server Controller and add the new server to your Men & Mice Suite installation.
Another alternative is to not move any data from the old slave. Just add the new server in, then select all your zones (deselecting anything already on the slave, such as localhost), right-click on the selection, and choose Add Slave Server > [name of new slave].
